Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is considered an essential ingredient for online success. The favorite argument of SEO proponents is that there is no point spending time and money on creating a website if no one can find it. While this makes logical sense, it is perhaps necessary to evaluate if SEO is the only way by which to attract and increase traffic to your website.

There is a general tendency to believe SEO is the be all and end all of internet marketing. This is not completely true. Today, there are other avenues like social media marketing open to internet marketers, which give them the desired results.

The question as to whether it is possible for your website to do well without SEO is a difficult one to answer. The honest answer probably would be ‘no’. SEO is and will continue to be beneficial to websites.

11 300x188 Does Your Website Really Need SEO for Success – Is Social Media Gaining an Edge over SEO?However, we have to keep in mind that things are changing fast in the internet marketing space. People are using alternative techniques like social media marketing for getting traffic to their websites. Does this spell the death of SEO?

No. Atleast not anytime in the near future.

But it is worth looking at this topic in detail and understanding the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ of this threat to SEO (if I may call it that). That is what this article aims to do.

Factors That Could be Responsible for SEO’s Fall from Grace

The first factor is the nature of SEO, which could be viewed as fulfilling only part of the objective of internet marketing. Closely associated with this is the reducing importance of link building, which is an important SEO strategy.

Secondly, the constantly changing search algorithms of Google make it difficult (not to mention expensive) to achieve a consistently high search engine ranking.

Thirdly (and perhaps most importantly), there are several strategies Google has up its sleeves to make the search process more effective and valuable to the searchers.  Not many of these ranking factors are put into operation yet, so for the moment SEO is good.

But when these factors are finally put into play, it might make social media more of a “necessary” strategy to follow along with standard SEO practices.

Let us consider each of these factors in detail.

Nature of SEO

The aim of SEO is to optimize your website for search engines. The basic principle is to use certain techniques (called SEO tools) to make your website more attractive to search engines.

Nature of SEO Does Your Website Really Need SEO for Success – Is Social Media Gaining an Edge over SEO?

And when your website is displayed at the top of the search engine results page, the chances are more people will visit your website, increasing the traffic. So SEO increases traffic, but does not guarantee conversions, though it does increase the chances of conversions.

Link Building

Link building is an important SEO technique and refers to the number of external websites that link back to you. In general, the more back links you get, greater is your search engine ranking.

link building Does Your Website Really Need SEO for Success – Is Social Media Gaining an Edge over SEO?

The idea behind link building was that websites that provide interesting, original content will be linked to by relevant websites. Thus the link was to be an indicator of the quality and relevancy of the website to the search and hence was considered an important factor by search engines in ranking the website.

This, however, led to the emergence of a link buying industry and the other kinds of spamming activities. All this effectively results in impairing the search quality. Google sat up and took notice.

The result was the Panda algorithm that in one stroke has completely revolutionized the way links were being built (although spamming continues to happen).

poor content Does Your Website Really Need SEO for Success – Is Social Media Gaining an Edge over SEO?

Google has now become very severe with ‘low quality sites’ and downgrades the search engines results of websites that link to such sites. Such sites invariably include those with little or no moderation on their comments or those which are full of ads. Popular article directories like ezine articles came under the category of ‘low quality website’ and it faced a penalty last year. So the importance of ‘commercial’ link building or even submission to article directories as an SEO strategy diminishes.

But the good old fashioned method of getting links to your website with great content still works and will continue to work for a long time.

Changing Search Engine Algorithms

Google, in a bid to crack down on black hat SEO and to keep search results relevant is constantly changing the parameters of search. What worked today may not work a year or even a month down the line.  An example is the Panda algorithm, we discussed earlier.

For instance, Google may suddenly place greater importance on sites that have uploaded videos. So if you are relying solely on SEO for your website, you might be missing out if you do not have a video present on the page in question.

changing SE algorithms Does Your Website Really Need SEO for Success – Is Social Media Gaining an Edge over SEO?

The constantly changing search algorithms mean you need to continuously keep tweaking your SEO strategy to maintain that top spot on Google. This is expensive and time consuming but is definitely rewarding.

One way to insulate yourself from Google algorithms would be to pay attention to the content on your website. Do not rely only on gimmicks to push you to the top spot. If your SEO strategy is coupled with original, relevant content that adds value to the reader, your search engine rankings will get the desired boost.

Google Strategies

  1. Google Personalized Search

Google is working out strategies to personalize the search results to users. So depending on factors like what the user has searched for earlier and where he is searching from, the results will vary. So it is very much possible that your website ranking may differ on different computers and with different users.

Another aspect of personalizing the search process could be the introduction of a ‘search filtering’ feature. Google may allow searchers the option to block results from particular sites (say, article directories), effectively negate SEO strategies that focus on these areas.

  1. Google Focus on Bounce Rates

We have learned time and again that it is only a matter of time before Google catches on internet marketing tricks. If Google observes consistently high bounce rates on your website, the obvious conclusion is poor user engagement and /or irrelevant content. This might results in a lowered ranking.

  1. Google Focus on Real Time Results

It is becoming increasingly clear to Google that information needs of searchers are time sensitive. So the relevant results on social networking sites like Twitter and facebook (that are obviously more current) may receive a higher ranking than your website.

The Power of Social Media

Perhaps as a direct result of all the above reasons, businesses have now turned their attention to social media marketing. The loss in traffic due to Google strategies, algorithm changes etc (which can be quite significant) has increased the popularity of social media sites.

You can advertise on facebook, post tweets on Twitter, run contests, start conversations, submit reviews… the list is endless. Social media is providing innovative opportunities to engage with customers.

Use sites like Twitter, LinkedIn and facebook to get your content out. Link back to your website. Your traffic will be much higher or at least equivalent to what you receive with traditional SEO.

In Conclusion

We looked at various factors that significantly reduce the impact of SEO in directing traffic to your website and we have discovered the power of social media marketing.

in conclusion Does Your Website Really Need SEO for Success – Is Social Media Gaining an Edge over SEO?

At the moment it would be wrong to say that one scores over the other or that one should be totally discontinued in favor of the other. The fact is SEO is good and still continues to make money. The best strategy is to have a mix of SEO and social media marketing strategy. The proportion perhaps, will depend on the particular nature of your business and the customers you are targeting.

If you run an online business, our tested approach is to continue with traditional SEO (since this is what has worked for us time and time again) AND add a little bit of social media to your marketing. You would be surprised with the results you get!

Once again, this blog post is not written to create confusion in the SEO industry. We are just giving you our honest opinions on what’s working now and what the future seems to hold for us.

Do you think social media will ever make SEO redundant? Why or why not? Please do let us know!

SEO- Precise Science or Lucky Guesswork?

by sandhya on February 16, 2012

SEO Sceince or Lucky Guesswork SEO Precise Science or Lucky Guesswork? The importance of SEO in your online marketing efforts is no longer under dispute. For your website to contribute positively towards your business, it has to be found by people searching for relevant products and /or services.  And since searchers rarely look beyond page 1 of the Google results page (that’s right, page two is not good enough), your website has to be in the top on page 1.

Enter…The SEO Experts

With little or no knowledge about successful SEO strategies, you may feel the best option is to hand over SEO into the capable hands of an ‘SEO Expert’. Now comes a tricky question. Is SEO a precise science or lucky guesswork? Do the said SEO experts base their strategies on precise scientific principles or is it just a random application of general techniques that (sometimes) hits the nail on the head to get the desired results. And if indeed it is guesswork, are SEO agencies justified in charging such exorbitant fees? Let us examine the issue in detail.

“SEO Takes Time to Work”

This is one of the most common phrases you hear whenever you approach any SEO agency, big or small. SEO experts go to great lengths to convince you that SEO results are not apparent overnight. Considerable time must elapse before the website acquires a high ranking. This perhaps is an indication that they are themselves in the dark as to what will work and need time to figure things out.

But in all fairness, they do assure that though results may take time to manifest, they would be sustainable. Meaning though your website takes long to reach the top, it will remain there for long. So maybe these SEO experts do know what they are doing.

Perhaps SEO is Combination of Science and Guesswork

The key SEO techniques are based on precise scientific principles. For instance, consider keyword optimization. By ensuring a measurable keyword density across the content and optimal keyword placement such in the title, first line and last line, it is possible to attract the attention of search engines towards your website. This is a scientific process.

But keyword determination is often not a precise science. Yes, the SEO agency does carry out extensive research and looks at the relatively rankings of various relevant keywords. But often intuition does play a key role. Or a creative tweak can greatly enhance the relevance of the keyword. Or it is possible that someone stumbled on the perfect keyword purely by accident. (Chances of this being made public is not high for obvious reasons).

Coming to the other important SEO technique, link building, the same holds true. While the selection of the websites to link with are determined by precise factors such as their page rank, relevance etc, the comments generating the link, the anchor text  etc are more a result of creative processes and involve some degree of guesswork

In Conclusion

We may say that only professionals who are well aware of the scientific principles of SEO can indulge in lucky guesswork that will produce results. It is like when a seasoned cook says ‘a pinch of any ingredient’. The cook can afford to guess the ‘pinch’ because he is an expert. Same is true of SEO experts.

On that note “Happy Cooking”…er.. Website Building with SEO.

How Boring Can SEO REALLY Get..

by EricHammer on February 16, 2012

boring How Boring Can SEO REALLY Get..As regular readers of this blog know, I don’t tend to use it to push the services of Quantum SEO Labs. I’m also not paid based on whether you buy our services and so this blog has become a trusted source of information. That said, I’m going to talk a little bit about what we can do for you as well as what you can do for yourself to deal with the boring side of SEO.

Is There an Exciting Side?

SEO, more than anything is a repetitive exercise. For all that there are lots of things you can do, ultimately, the goal here is to build your links as much as possible so that you can get your page ranked highly in Google. There is of course a whole art form surrounding how you get those links, but ultimately, that is 90% of what SEO is about.

Now that said, depending on what you happen to be passionate about, there are indeed exciting sides to SEO. For example, I happen to enjoy writing and thus I find the blogging side of SEO to be rather exciting. However, there are other parts that could make anyone want to tear their hair out (and people who know me know I don’t have much to tear out).

The Boring Side

The thing that makes SEO boring for some people is the fact that it’s repetitive. Ultimately, your goal to get yourself listed in lots of directories and get lots of blog comments out and do all the other things that make your links show up all over the place. Basically, that’s where we come in – as SEO experts, we deal with the boring stuff and the repetitive work so that you don’t have to.

But What about Automated Services?

Yes, there are some automated services that you can use to solve many of the problems of SEO. I did a review a while back of several such options, such as SENuke and Rank Builder. However, while these tools can be quite useful, they can also be rather dangerous.

The reason, as anyone who reads this blog regularly knows is that Google (and frankly everyone else it seems) hates automated links. They want to see real links being built by real people. That’s why you hire an SEO team – to help you build up the links that you need.

Doing It Yourself

However, if you happen to want to build the links yourself but don’t want to do it all on complete “manual” mode, you can automate the process somewhat while at the same time creating unique content which doesn’t look like spam.

My Suggestion

My suggestion here is to use an autofill program which will put the boring stuff into forms for you and maybe even put in a link to your site. Then all you need to do is fill in an interesting comment on what was said in the blog post and you can get the links out there. Still too much work for you? Hey – like I said, it’s boring to do SEO. And that’s why people tend to hire pros like us to do the job for them.

Black hat SEO 2ndarticle Can You Fool Google all the Time? – Do Black Hat SEO Techniques Really Work?

No and Yes. That is order for the answers to the above two questions. Unfortunately (or fortunately) black hat SEO techniques do work and help enhance the ranking of your website, but the bad news is Google will soon catch up with you. And that may signal the very end of your website – SEO and all.

What is Black Hat SEO?

Black hat SEO techniques refer to SEO strategies that are frowned upon by Google for use in increasing website ranking. Black hat SEO techniques lure a visitor to a website under false pretences. So what the visitor finds on the website is totally different from what he expected to find. And Google gets agitated because user blames Google for inefficiency (after all, the searcher using Google may not even be aware of the concept of SEO). Google therefore disallows certain SEO techniques and may penalize you for using them.

The Temptation to Use Black Hat SEO is High

This is because the black hat techniques are really effective and ensure a high ranking for your website, resulting in greater traffic. Moreover, black hat SEO delivers the results rapidly as compared to white hat SEO strategies that are expensive and take time. Besides of course, there is the thrill of doing something that is forbidden. And most webmasters stick to it to experience the high that comes with outsmarting Google (albeit temporarily).

Popular Black Hat SEO

  • Keyword Stuffing

You stuff the text with keywords to attract Google’s bots to such an extent that content seems absurd.

  • Cloaking

The actual page is cloaked and a different more search engine friendly page is revealed to the search engine. This is an effective way to increase traffic to an unpopular webpage

  • Doorway Pages

These are super optimized pages which are ranked high by search engines, but when the user clicks on them (surprise, surprise), he is directed to a completely different page that sells something or is an ad website. The advantage is that by simply creating a single keyword optimized page, you can increase the traffic to your ‘real’ website. So there is no hard work in planning an SEO strategy for your website.

  • Hidden Text

This is a sneaky technique where the actual links are hidden (very small size font, same color as the background) and accidentally clicking on them leads to the real website. It obviates the need for working keywords into the content and reduces SEO efforts by that much, while pulling visitors to the website.

These are just some of the techniques. Black hat SEO techniques are numerous, limited only by your creativity in discovering more.

Is Black Hat SEO worth the Effort?

The honest answer to that question would be no. It is necessary to remember that increasing the website ranking is not the end, but only a means to the end. The aim is not to increase the visitors to the site, but increase the sales by increasing the number of visitors. With black hat SEO, that is hardly likely to happen. Because the visitor sees something completely different from what he was looking for, his first reaction would be to get off your site. Very rarely would someone stick around and make a purchase or fill a form or whatever it is that you want them to do.

And the chances are very high that you may be penalized by Google, with nothing significant to show for it.

And if it is the ‘high’ that you are looking for, I would recommend bungee jumping. That gives a greater adrenaline rush. As for SEO, stick to white hat techniques.

Can You Really Penalize Your Competitors Using SEO

by sandhya on February 13, 2012

SEO and competition 1starticle Can You Really Penalize Your Competitors Using SEOSEO (or Search Engine Optimization) is now an established method to enhance online sales and increase awareness for your products and /or services. By using SEO techniques such as keyword optimization, link building etc, a website acquires a high ranking in the search engine results page, leading to increased traffic resulting in increased conversions.

The Use of SEO Techniques

Search engines have certain rules about the SEO techniques you can use. Certain techniques called ‘black hat SEO’ are not approved by search engine. Any website using black hat SEO may be penalized by Google and removed from the SERP for a while or indefinitely depending on the severity of the offence and whether it is a first time offence etc. So black hat SEO is a definite NO when it comes to your website, in spite of the short term high rankings it may offer. But…..

Here is a Thought

How about using black hat SEO for your top competitor’s website? Google rules are the same for everyone and the competitor will likely be penalized. And with the competitor website out of the way, you will get all the extra traffic. (Well the customers have to go somewhere, isn’t it?)

So How Do You Penalize a Competitor with SEO

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), the methods are numerous, limited perhaps only by your creativity.

You could use the keywords for which your competitor is ranked high and post negative reviews about their products/services on popular review sites. While this may not get the competitor penalized by Google as such, it may definitely affect their product sales and popularity. In fact in such cases, you probably want the review sites to be ranked high so that more people can read ‘your’ negative reviews.
One way to get a competitor’s website penalized by Google is by spamming their comments section with hundreds of meaningless links. This will get Google to think that the competitor is buying links from a link farm and penalize the website by lowering the rank.
So you are in the clear. But the question is are you!

Is it Worth the Effort?

While healthy competitor review and follow up is essential for business, it is necessary to draw the line somewhere thanks to a concept called business ethics. (Not heard of it? Loads of information online)

If you find that your negative SEO strategy has been successful in pushing your competitor from say spot 2 to spot 3 in the first page of the results, you will be tempted to further your efforts and to move the website further south. Also the temptation will arise to try this on other competitors. As a result, you may be spending more time on downgrading your competition rather than focusing on your business. No point going through all the trouble getting more traffic to your site, if you can’t cater to them because you lost your focus.

It may be a better idea to invest time and energy on your products and service and your own SEO strategy to attain a top ranking. At least that will ensure a good night’s sleep.
