The backbone of any SEO campaign is always going to be building backlinks. Now while you can certainly pay someone to do the work of building backlinks for you, it’s also possible to do the job yourself if you know how to build the links. Here are 10 great ways to build quality links to your website:
1. Blog Comments
The single most popular way to build backlinks is by commenting on blog posts. These kinds of links are quite easy to get because you merely need to visit and write a comment. Note that most blogs are “no follow” blogs though, meaning that you won’t get much value from the links. This means that you need to hunt down blogs which are do follow.
There are a number of ways to do this, but one of the easiest is to look for blogs which use the CommentLuv commenting system. CommentLuv is a special system which allows you to offer blog comments with do follow links. The idea is to encourage people to leave quality comments. By the way, that is definitely important, because most blogs worth getting links from will not publish your comments if you don’t have something of value to say.
2. Forums
Another easy way to get quality links is to visit various online forums where you can include a link in your signature. Again however, you need to ensure that your comments on the forums are actually worthwhile. Otherwise, you’ll end up having your comments removed as spam.
3. Guest Blogs
While it is time consuming, guest blogs are a great way to get quality backlinks for free. Not only can you get a link which is actually within the content (meaning that it’s worth much more in terms of link power), but you also get traffic from the people who visit the blog regularly, meaning that you have that much of a better chance of getting some quality traffic which is directly related to your own area of interest and expertise.
4. Plugin/Theme Sponsorship
When people create blogs using WordPress (or to a lesser extent, Blogger), they need plugins which will allow them to add additional functionality to their blogs. They also need themes which provide some extra features on the blogs. If you know how to write such things, you can create them and give them away in exchange for free backlinks from the blogs that people create with your software or themes. Or, you could invest a small amount for a one time fee and have them made professionally.
5. RSS Directories
RSS, which stands for really simple syndication is a method getting your content into the hands of your readers in a simple manner. It’s really designed as a “push” system which allows them to get a limited version of whatever you have on your website “pushed” to their computers automatically every time you do an update of your website. However, they also need to find these RSS feeds and that’s where you can get additional backlinks. There are hundreds of directories of RSS feeds which you can sign up for and get your information into so that you can get additional backlinks. Not to mention that you’ll also be able to improve the numbers of your RSS subscribers.
6. Ezine Directories
No, they’re not what they once were, but Ezine directories are still a quality source of backlinks for those who need them. The key is that you need to ensure that whatever content you send to Ezines is just as good as what you’ll put up on your website. It needs to be that way because of the Google updates which make sure to weed out junk. It also helps to put your Ezine articles only on directories which have human reviews of your content to ensure that what you are putting up is considered to be worthwhile.
7. Web Directories
Another great source of quality backlinks is to put your site into various web directories. There are a number of these, including things like the Yahoo Directory (which does cost money) and DMOZ, which is harder to get into but which is free. It’s also useful under the rubric to look for links from sites which aggregate headlines, including places like the MSN and Yahoo homepages.
8. Social Media
Social media should definitely be high on your list of places to get quality backlinks. This includes places like Twitter, Facebook and all the like as well as social bookmarking sites such as Delicious and Digg. The important thing with these places though is to try to get people who have more influence to link to you rather than just putting up your own links. The reason is that these links are relatively easy to get and the links will have more value as far as Google and other search engines are concerned if you get them from what is known as “influencers.”
9. News Websites
Another often overlooked source of free quality backlinks is the news aggregation sites like Google News and Yahoo News. The reason they are often overlooked is that these sites are not so easy to get into to begin with. In order to do so, your content must be excellent and you need to have more than one person posting to your website. However, if you do manage to get your site listed in the news websites, these can be an excellent source of free backlinks as they are often updated much more quickly than other sites.
10.Google Places
Local businesses take note: if you haven’t got a listing on Google Places then you are losing out on of the best sources of free links there is anywhere on the web. Google Places is designed to allow people to find local businesses to fulfill their needs and it does this by automatically loading itself whenever a local search is done (for example, if you type “dentist Las Vegas”). While you don’t need to have a website to have a Google Places listing, you can optionally add a website to the listing and thus get yourself a free backlink from Google’s own system.

Not many people know how an SEO’s (Search Engine Optimizer) regular day goes and what is it made of. Yes, SEOs are humans just like all of us but there seems to be curiosity about learning exactly what goes on in the life of an SEO.
Just like how Cricket fans wondered what their favorite players ate for lunch during a Test Match, SEO fans have been craving to know about a regular SEO day regardless of whether it affects them or not!
Waking Up
Waking up at 5:30 or 6 AM is pretty usual for an SEO. An early start means a lot more work can be finished on time. Also, most SEOs have to deal with international clients in different time zones too, it helps waking up early and being prepared for a client at any time of the day then.
A simple energetic breakfast, a cup of coffee and the day begins. First, checking for new emails is the most important part of the morning. Although the inbox has been checked late at night right before sleeping, there are usually a lot of new emails in the morning, including spam.
A good SEO replies to customer complaints and help issues first thing in the morning, and deletes spam!
Day
As the day progresses and after checking emails, link-building begins. This takes a lot of effort and energy and is done earlier in the day for that reason alone. The freshest part of an SEO’s day is the morning right after coffee and a beer and this is what it helps in.
A good SEO can go a few hours of link-building without a break, send out notifications to clients during this time too and then retire for a small break.
Noon
Noon is reserved for all SEO-related jobs other than link-building. This could involve dealing with ad and web design problems if international clients, scripting, etc. Noon till evening is usually reserved for jobs that do not require a lot of effort.
During small breaks in this part of the day, an SEO will inevitably wander towards other websites on the Web too, networking with others, starting work on a person project etc.
It’s a good time of the day to be social and come with new business ideas too.
Evening
An early start doesn’t always mean an early end to a day in the life of an SEO. Although it would be best to retire at around 7 PM, it sometimes gets impossible as there are usually a lot of customer emails to reply to, problems to resolve, clients to talk to, well into the evening.
Latest by 9 PM however, an SEO surely retires as going anyway longer than that time can be really unhealthy.
Night
After work for the day is complete, there is usually some friends and family time watching a movie, going to your favorite coffee shop for a little relaxing time and chit chat with homies or just lying around and doing nothing, preparing for a good night’s sleep.
Sleeping well past 12 is really common and a last email check before sleeping is like a drill now.

Well, I admit that the title really is not true. I just wrote this title in a way which would get attention. But I have a point to make in this post.
A lot of SEO service providers (myself included) think that inbound links to your website which come from relevant pages provide a huge boost to your website authority and rankings. This definitely makes sense because Google itself implies that it rewards relevant inbound links.
However, although relevant links are helpful, they are not as helpful as you might think. Here are some points which help in making the case:
1. Terry from the Warrior Forum started a 60 day experiment thread in which, through evidence he concluded that non-relevant and relevant links help in exactly the same way. Read more about it here.
2. In my personal experience I have never used relevant backlinks because they are difficult to find and I am a little lazy. I have always used links which came from authority websites but are not relevant at all! Results? I am ranking in the top 5 for extremely competitive keyword terms with 3-4 months of SEO work.
3. All the successful websites out there have 95% of their inbound links coming from non-relevant websites. I have yet to see a successful website which has more than 20% relevant inbound links. It just does not happen.
4. The thing is, if you focus only on relevant links, you will most likely leave 90% of the other general links out there which happen to be of good quality. This results in you using less number of links.
5. How does Google determine relevancy? Is the on-page content useful or does it use the data for the whole website? This always leads to a heated discussion so we really have no way in figuring out how relevant “relevant” content really is.
6. All the successful SEO firms out there focus on inbound links from high authority websites and not necessarily from relevant websites.
7. Customers who want relevant links think that they help a lot more with the rankings and for that reason are ready to pay 4X more for the links. SEO companies who want to make some extra cash can always supply the customers with these links, knowing fully well that these links do not really help any more than the “normal” inbound links.
My conclusion is: Relevant and non-relevant links help you just the same.
If you agree or disagree, let me know by commenting!

Five years ago, a person could start a website and spam across the whole internet submitting links and he would end up on the first page of the major search engines. In those times, the link game was that of quantity and not quality. Sadly, those times are long gone.
It goes so far as to say that if someone tells you that simply getting a lot of backlinks to your website will rank you higher, run in the other direction.
Search engines now have more common sense and can figure out when a certain link building campaign is not natural. And when they do, you get penalized.
So should you really get a lot of links to rank high? The simple answer is NO. Getting a lot of links actually turns into spamming most of the times, something which search engines just do not tolerate. It can also result in buying links from link farms and FFA websites, which are severely looked down upon.
So how should you approach your link building? The simple answer is: Get quality backlinks from authority websites.
It sounds simple enough, but anyone who is experienced in this field would tell you how difficult getting good quality backlinks are. That being said, because authority websites are (mainly) those with a high Page Rank, getting backlinks from them is normally well-worth the hassle.
I have seen websites which have less than 500 backlinks and are ranking higher than websites with over 10,000 links. The reason: The backlinks they do have are coming from authority websites.
My personal preference is to get links from authority websites. This is the reason why my website has a smaller number of inbound links, when compared to other dominant websites in this industry. I am ranking around number 6-9 for very competitive phrases with only one-tenth of the links my competition has.
So if you are getting low quality links in bulk amounts, stop and think what you are doing. First of all, you will most likely be paying a hefty monthly fee to keep the links active. Secondly, if they really are junk quality, you might as well get rid of them, because they will not help you.
I recently came across a website which provides 10,000 for around USD 89 per month. Not a bad deal, until you check where the links are coming from.
So go for quality and not quantity. That is how the big boys are doing it!
